Body Scrub Recipes, Simple & Fun!

Body Scrub Recipes require no more than salt or sugar and oil.

Finely ground sugar or salt is the best. Larger grains are a bit too agressive for the skin.

Grinding sugar or salt in an old coffee grinder is a good way to turn your ingredients into perfect, fine scrub material.

Sugar or Salt

Which one to use in body scrub recipes?

The choice between sugar or salt is totally a matter of taste. Only if you like using a scrub shortly after shaving, sugar might be the better choice. Have you ever gone swimming in the ocean with smooth and freshly shaved legs? Salt is reputed for making even the most tiny, microscopical skin lesions sting and burn! If you have injuries, never scrub until they are completely healed, not with salt or sugar.

The scent of salt is very neutral, it doesn’t really have a smell of its own. The sweet smell of sugar can interfere with your combination of essential oils, but it can also blend nicely with the chosen fragrance, giving it some extra sweetness. For some mouth-watering body scrub recipes, add sweet almond oil to brown sugar and spice them up with a dash of cinnamon, nutmeg or cardamom.

Preservatives

Part of the good about making your own body scrub recipes is that you don’t need to load them with chemicals for preservation. That also means a homemade body scrub can not be kept as long as a commercial one.

The ingredients salt, sugar and oil do not go bad very fast by themselves. Actually, if you mix your body scrub recipes and keep them in a closed jar, they will stay good for a long time. This is because they contain no water. Even the smallest amount of water can be a breeding ground for bacteria. At the moment you start scooping scrub out of the jar while using it, the countdown begins. Use your body scrub recipes within a few weeks from that date.

A way to enjoy your body scrub recipes for a longer amount of time, is to only take the amount needed with you in the shower (and use that up).
