Dr Hauschka Volume Mascara :: Review

Dr Hauschka Volume Mascara reviewed by an organic makeup devotee. (Yours truly… 😉 ) A user’s experience with packaging, texture, ingredients, scent and most importantly this mascara’s performance.

Packaging

A round, black tube. Easy to hold and apply.

Texture

Smooth, velvety and creamy mascara, that applies evenly. If I’m being messy and get a bit of mascara somewhere around the eye, it is very easy to clean off with a moist finger or queue-tip. Dr Hauschka Volume Mascara is a natural mascara, but holds well – all day! It also washes off easily with a facial cleanser.

Scent

Very delicate scent, barely noticeable, but just enough. I would say it has a hint of fragrance. The word ‘fragrance’ on the ingredient list of this natural mascara refers to a blend of essential oils. Hauschka’s ingredients are very natural and when possible organic.

Ingredients

Ingredients, INCI: Water (Aqua), Pyrus Cydonia Seed Extract, Alcohol, Saccharum Officinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Sorbitol, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Acacia Senegal Gum, Cetearyl Alcohol, Beeswax (Cera Alba), Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Lysolecithin, Euphrasia Officinalis Extract, Silk (Serica) Powder, Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil, Hectorite, Rosa Damascena Flower Wax, Rosa Damascena Flower Oil, Fragrance (Parfum), Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Linalool*, Silica, Iron Oxides (CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Ultramarines (CI 77007).

For the much needed dark color, Hauschka uses Iron Oxides, Carmine and Titanium Dioxide.  These minerals have been extensively reseached for their health effects by the Scientific Committee of the European Union. They haven’t been found to be carcinogen or toxic. Obviously, a mascara without any pigments – without showing a shade of some dark color – wouldn’t be much of a mascara, right?

Dr Hauschka is a European brand. Nice to know perhaps is that European regulations are stricter than the ones in the US. I do not trust just any mascara having the  word ‘natural’ slapped onto it, especially since we’re talking about a product meant for application so close to the eyes. I do believe I can trust Dr Hauschka.

Natural skin care and cosmetics company Dr Hauschka has antroposophical views, which means that they act from a place of respect toward the human body, believing in the body’s own capacity to heal. Their products are created with those ideas in mind. The result is a line of very natural cosmetics, made with as much organic ingredients as possible. For a natural mascara, this is an excellent choice.

What I like about Dr Hauschka Volume Mascara

  • It has a very pleasant brush. Rather large (which I like!), but made up of many fine hairs. It allows me to ‘brush’ on the mascara giving my lashes a full and natural-looking coverage.
  • As a contact-lens-wearer with sensitive eyes in general, Hauschka’s mascara is one I can (finally) use without tearing, itching or burning. Such a relief to have found a dependable natural mascara.
  • I love the way it makes my lashes look. Nicely separated and volumized. Not in a way that screams “Hey, I’m wearing mascara!” to the world, but more of a “I have beautiful eyes, maybe it’s me, maybe it’s Hauschka.” So yes, I suppose this mascara gives a natural look. If you’re trying to go for the “Lady Gaga effect”, it might not be the one for you. Allthough… I have tried occasionally to layer it up, letting the layers dry a bit in between, which actually worked very well for some crazy volume.

What I like less about Dr Hauschka Volume Mascara

Nothing really. Natural mascara with great performance, and the price is fair.

Final Thoughts & Other Natural Mascara’s

Dr Hauschka makes a great natural mascara! I don’t find it overly expensive either. Less than a chemically-loaded mascara from one of the real fancy cosmetic brands. More than a basic one from a simple brand, but if you have sensitive eyes, you’re most likely going to be condemned to a more expensive kind anyways. Might as well try one that’s natural then…

Every time I go through a tube of this mascara I’m amazed at how it is doesn’t dry out and doesn’t become clumpy near the end. After a few months, it’s still moist and I usually get a new one because I know you’re supposed to replace a mascara every few moths, not because mine no longer looks or feels ‘good’. Note how accurately the mascara in my pictures reflects this statement? Completely ravaged!
