Organic Lipstick :: Review of Bella Mari Natural Lipstick

Packaging

As I wanted to try this organic lipstick by Bella Mari in many different colors, I ordered samples first. These come in little, round pots, which have shown themselves to be super handy for everyday use. You can slip them into most any location – from a tiny handbag to a back pocket. The pots are translucent, which gives you a great view of the exact tint from the bottom. They have a white lid with the color’s name specified on it. The full size Bella Mari natural organic lipstick packaging is dark with gold, a classic glamorous look.

Texture

Nothing but positivity for the texture of Bella Mari’s  natural organic lipstick! It’s solid and doesn’t melt at tropical temperatures. It’s also very smooth and soft as silk. Because of it’s solidity, you only need a little bit to smooth out over the entire surface of your lips. I really like how this organic lipstick seems to be very rich in color pigments. When applied generously, the color pops! However, I also enjoy a more discrete sheer sometimes, and using less allows me to go for the ‘hint-of-color-look’.

Scent

A faint sweet and perhaps a tiny bit powdery scent. Very hard to pinpoint what the smell of Bella Mari organic lipstick comes from exactly. I would say it barely has a scent at all – which is a good thing, because you don’t want to be tasting your lipstick all the time. At least I’d rather not. If I would have to guess, I think I would say the barely noticeable sweet odor could come from the vegetable butters in there, such as cocoa ans shea butter. Actually, this paragraph about the scent is a bit funny, because there’s very little to say about a scent that is so faint, yet here I am – desperately trying to describe it. I guess it’s pretty obvious that Bella Mari’s organic lipstick is likely to be a very good pick if you’re sensitive to scents and fragrances.

Ingredients

Ingredients, INCI: Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa), Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Iron Oxide, Mica. May Contain: Manganese Violet or Titanium Dioxide.

Bella Mari makes a very natural blend of vegetable oils, butters and beeswax, plus the necessary color pigments. Without those, there would be no organic lipstick – just a color-less balm. This a very clean ingredient list, it’s going to be hard to find something more natural.

Color

Oooh, the colors! What a delightful shades, they’re all so different, but very usable. For me four out of five are perfect.

Peek-a-Boo is a very nude shade of beige and my first impression was that it made my pale face look dull. Perhaps other skin tones can have more fun with that one? After a few tries, and with the right eye makeup however I came around and started appreciating this neutral tone.

Innocence is an all-time-classic rose. The tint that I can wear with most any type of clothing and for every possible occasion. It is the one shade that looks like the color of my lips, or at least the color they would have if they weren’t chapped, dry and lacking blood flow. It’s the color I want on my lips, to look my natural kind of beautiful. The kind of beautiful that’s hard to achieve without any help, though!

Tropicana is such a sweet pastel pink – it’s not rose or fuchsia, it’s not peach, it’s not coral, but it’s the perfect in-between nude and cheerful shade of pink.

Sugar & Spice has been my favorite tint from the start. It looks delicious, brown enough to be warm, but not too brown. Works wonderful with an outfit in shades of brown or other warm colors. Great for autumn/fall, but works for other seasons just as well.

Pink Pizzazz is the one I like to layer a little bit of on top of my Henna Lips ‘cherry’. It’s a lovely bright fuchsia. Adds some fun to a plain outfit, adds a spark of color to your face. Pops nicely and makes a statement, one that says: ‘Hey, lets rock some color today!”

What I like about Bella Mari’s Natural Organic Lipstick

  • The large selection of tints.
  • Beautifully saturated colors, which you can apply as a thin layer for a hint of color and as a thicker layer for a deeper tone.
  • The solid texture works very well, allows for the variations mentioned earlier and makes this organic lipstick very economical in use.
  • Bella Mari’s natural ingredients.
  • I’ve noticed this lipstick is indeed very long lasting. Way past halfway through the day, it still shows. I eat and drink a lot, but this stuff keeps the promise Bella Mari makes on the website: “Long lasting natural color lipsticks that stay on all day.”
  • The possibility to get as many trial sizes as you want! A certain amount for free, but if that’s not enough, they have them for sale too. I love sampling. 🙂

What I like less about Bella Mari’s Natural Organic Lipstick

Nothing to complain about. I’m just wondering if this is really an organic lipstick. I’ve noticed how Bella Mari adds the term organic to many of the ingredients of different products, and although the title of this product says ‘Bella Mari Pure Mineral Organic Lipstick Color’, it doesn’t specify any of the ingredients being organic. Does that mean they all are? I’ll ask them… I’m also wondering about the Vitamin E Acetate, because I’ve heard that was the synthetic form of Vitamin E.

Final thoughts & other Organic Lipstick/Makeup Reviews

I’m definitely in love. The only hard thing is to pick which one to go with. I definitely need to start collecting the entire palette!

Pricetag: Full size organic lipstick goes for around $15.95 – the more you order, the bigger the discounts. Trial Sizes are only $1.

Updates

  • Update 1 │ I’m in the middle of an email conversation with Bella Mari customer service, because I noticed something odd after writing this review. First I was looking at the organic skin care line “Herbal Choice Mari” and saw how almost all ingredients in the product descriptions had the word organic in front of them. Then it struck me that this organic lipstick is listed as natural in the titles for some shades and organic in the title of a few other colors. However, the ingredients in these lipsticks did not have the word organic in front of them. I got curious because it seemed a bit strange to specify this in some places but not site-wide. I’ve pointed out to Bella Mari customer service that some of the titles say ‘organic’, which can be misleading. I haven’t received the final word about it, but it certainly looks like these lipsticks are not actually made with organic ingredients.
  • Update 2 │As it turns out, even though the title contained the word ‘organic’, the ingredients in these lipsticks are not. For a real organic lipstick, you should check out Miessence. Bella Mari makeup even though not with organic ingredients, is still a natural and toxin-free choice. Quite some time later I checked back and titles still haven’t changed. Through the main page in the menu choose > Bella Mari > Lipstick and Color > Natural Lipsticks > Harvest Moon and the title still says ‘Pure Mineral Organic Lipstick Color’. Is it just me or is that funny?
